Grown at a super high elevation–even for specialty coffee (2340 MASL) Gogogu is incredibly dense, sweet, and packed with flavor. Gogogu is the Oromiffa word for “dry” and also the name of the main mountain in this part of Ethiopia. This coffee comes to us from the town of Dida Haro Hada Raro in the Uraga district of Guji, located within Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Guji is one of Ethiopia’s oldest coffee-growing regions, and one of our personal favorites here at Defined. The coffees that have been coming out of this particular part of Ethiopia, especially the last few years, are truly exceptional and unique.
The farm’s extreme elevation and remote location make it very difficult to access, especially during the rainy season. Changing weather patterns throughout Ethiopia (like much of our world now, unfortunately) have also caused the rains to last longer and longer each year. Because of this, most local farmers utilize horses, mules, or donkeys to transport cherries to the wet mill, just a few jutes at a time. Though daily life in the rugged hills of Gogogu can be difficult, these producers are recognized throughout the world of coffee for their extreme dedication to producing high-quality coffees, as well as their deep-rooted knowledge of coffee and the rich traditions associated with Ethiopian coffee, especially.
The people of Gogogu belong to the Oromo ethnic group and speak the Oromiffa language. They live simple lives centered around coffee production as well as growing other agricultural crops (often inter-cropped with their coffee trees) like false banana, corn, Korch, and Wanza, as well as Sesa shade trees. The soil in this part of the country is a fertile sandy loam, providing excellent drainage. It is also packed with nutrients, so the use of pesticides or fertilizers is not necessary, provided the planting is done properly.
This coffee was brought to us by our good friends at Red Fox Coffee Merchants.
